My Big Knit

The Big Knit is a charity partnership between Innocent smoothies and Age UK which asks crafty souls across the UK to knit little hats to top Innocent smoothie bottles. Every hatted bottle sold raises 25p to help Age UK support older people with services and personal support.

My Big Knit journey took off during lockdown; I had 14 days of isolation ahead with nothing to do. One thing I did have however was a lot of wool!! Feeling rather uninspired, I needed a new project that I could jump in and out of. I never knew how far My Big Knit journey would go!

The Big Knit really helped me develop my knitting and as the hats go on there is a clear improvement in my style (apologies to those who receive slightly clumsier hats!). It's been so much fun learning new stitches and just generally creating these tiny little joys ♥

My friend and I set an aim to create 100 hats by the end of our University year... and we absolutely smashed it! In total I completed 62 hats, but my friend went above and beyond completing over 80 ~ very proud of her

I've become rather attached to my little hats- creating them has got me through some really tough times... but knowing that they will bring some joy to whoever purchases them along with helping raising money for Age UK makes the parting slightly easier. I hope they all end up in a loving home :)

Pattern Ideas

  • The majority of the patterns I used came from the Big Knit website itself ~ https://www.thebigknit.co.uk/knitting-patterns
  • Another amazing website is 'Jo's Big Knit' who publishes so many patterns which are brilliant for inspiration~ http://www.thebigknit.devonartist.co.uk/patterns.html
  • Get creative~ change the colours of certain elements of the pattern (e.g. I did the Apple hat in red, dark green and light green) to get completely unique feeling hats
  • You can also design your own hats~ I made a simple pumpkin design which I was quite proud of
  • Feel inspired by others~ I joined a Facebook group where people posted their creations and this was a great place to find inspiration
  • Some of your creations will go wrong- and that is okay! I attempted to make a bunch of grapes however the resulting green blob was not at all what I had envisioned! Nonetheless it resulted in a fun blobby hat which I'm sure someone will get joy out of looking at
  • Multicoloured wool is a very simple way to quickly create stunning hats!
  • Re-donation of hats you have previously purchased is also a great way to support the charity
